God Gives You a Lamp to Your Feet, Not a Flashlight

What Psalm 119:105 Teaches Us About Healing, Health, and Trusting the Process
Have you ever prayed for God to show you exactly what to do next?
Maybe you've asked questions like:
"Why am I so tired?"
"When will I finally feel better?"
"Will this treatment work?"
"Why isn't my body healing faster?"
Most of us long for certainty. We want to see the entire road before we take the first step.
But God's way is often different.
Psalm 119:105 says:
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
Notice what Scripture doesn't say. It doesn't say God's Word is a flashlight that illuminates the next five kilometres. It says it is a lamp.
In biblical times, a lamp was a small oil lamp that provided just enough light to safely take the next few steps. It didn't reveal the entire journey. It simply gave enough light to keep moving forward in faith.
I believe that's one of the greatest lessons we can apply—not only to our spiritual lives, but also to our health and wellness.
We Often Want a Flashlight
When people begin a healing journey, they understandably want answers.
What supplement should I take?
How long until I feel better?
Which diet is the right one?
Will my symptoms disappear?
Can someone guarantee results?
These are natural questions.
Living with digestive issues, menopause symptoms, fatigue, inflammation, chronic stress, or other ongoing health concerns can feel frustrating and overwhelming.
When we don't feel well, we want certainty.
We want a flashlight.
But healing usually unfolds one faithful step at a time.
Healing Is Rarely Instant
Our culture celebrates quick fixes.
Lose weight in 30 days.
Boost your energy overnight.
Reset your hormones instantly.
Erase years of health challenges with one product.
While some changes can produce noticeable improvements, lasting wellness is usually built through consistent daily habits rather than dramatic overnight transformations.
Our bodies are incredibly intelligent.
Given the right nourishment, adequate rest, regular movement, stress management, and time, they have an amazing capacity to repair and restore.
That process isn't always quick—but it is often remarkably resilient.
Just as God gives us enough light for today's journey, our bodies often respond best when we focus on today's healthy choices instead of worrying about the entire path ahead.
The Lamp Principle in Health
Think about climbing a staircase in the dark.
You don't need to see the top floor before taking the first step.
You only need enough light to safely reach the next one.
Health works much the same way.
Perhaps today's "lamp" looks like:
Drinking more water.
Adding vegetables to your meals.
Going for a short walk.
Prioritizing sleep.
Learning to slow down.
Managing stress with prayer or quiet reflection.
Asking for professional guidance instead of trying to figure everything out alone.
Each choice may seem small.
But over weeks and months, those small choices become powerful transformations.
Five Lamp Steps Toward Better Wellness
1. Nourish Instead of Punish
Many people approach nutrition from a place of restriction.
Instead of asking, "What should I eliminate?"
Ask:
"How can I better nourish my body today?"
Small improvements made consistently often lead to lasting change.
2. Respect Rest
Sleep isn't laziness.
It is one of God's gifts for restoration.
Many repair processes—from hormone regulation to immune function—are supported during healthy sleep.
Creating a calming bedtime routine can become one of the most impactful steps on your wellness journey.
3. Calm Your Nervous System
Our bodies were not designed to remain in a constant state of stress.
When we're continually overwhelmed, many body systems—including digestion, hormone regulation, and recovery—can be affected.
Practices such as prayer, deep breathing, spending time in nature, gratitude, and quiet reflection can support emotional well-being and help create space for restoration.
4. Celebrate Progress
Many people overlook how far they've come because they're focused on how far they still have to go.
Healing isn't always measured by dramatic milestones.
Sometimes success looks like:
sleeping through the night,
experiencing less bloating,
having more energy,
thinking more clearly,
or feeling hopeful again.
Every step matters.
5. Trust the Journey
Perhaps the hardest lesson is accepting that we won't always know what comes next.
Faith invites us to trust God even when the whole path isn't visible.
Wellness often asks the same thing.
Keep taking the next healthy step.
Then take another.
Eventually, you'll look back and realize just how far you've come.
Faith and Wellness Work Together
As a holistic nutrition practitioner, I've learned that healing is about more than food alone.
Our physical health is influenced by many interconnected factors, including nutrition, sleep, stress, movement, relationships, and emotional well-being.
For many people, faith is another important source of strength and resilience.
While nutrition supports the body, faith can provide hope, peace, and purpose during seasons when answers don't come quickly.
The two don't compete—they can complement one another.
When we care for the whole person, we recognize that wellness isn't simply the absence of illness. It's about creating habits that help us flourish physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
One Step Is Enough
If you've been waiting until you can see the entire path before beginning your wellness journey, consider this gentle reminder:
You don't need a flashlight.
You only need today's lamp.
Maybe today's step is drinking another glass of water.
Maybe it's preparing a nourishing meal.
Maybe it's taking a walk after dinner.
Maybe it's finally asking for support.
Or perhaps it's simply opening God's Word and allowing Him to guide your next step.
Small steps may not seem remarkable in the moment, but over time they become the path that leads to lasting change.
As Psalm 119:105 reminds us:
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
May you trust the light you've been given today—and have the courage to take the next step.
